Kullu Bijli Mahadev’s ancient temple – Lightning falls every twelve years
Bijli Mahadev Temple
There are many such miracles associated with Mahadev which are well known to all. There is one such supernatural and wonderful ancient temple which is established in Dev Bhumi Himachal, situated in the lap of Himalayas. It is believed in the entire Kullu valley that this valley is the form of a giant snake. Lord Shiva killed this giant snake.
The place where Bijli Mahadev Temple is located. There, after every twelve years, fierce lightning falls on the Shivling. Shivling gets broken due to lightning. The priests here collect the fragments of that broken Shivling and attached them with butter. After some time the Shivling transforms into its old solid form.
Why does lightning strike after every twelve years and how did this place get its name Kullu?
There is a legend behind this which is as follows-
Long ago there lived a demon named Kulant. Kulant demon took the form of a python from Nagandhar near Kullu and came to Mathan village from Lahaul Spiti via Ghogghardhar in Mandi. The dragon in the form of a demon stopped the flow of the Beas river by making a coil and sat down. He wanted to submerge this place in water.
His motive behind this was that all the animals and people living here should die by drowning in the water. Lord Shiva was worried by this thought stream of the dragon in the form of a demon.
Then Lord Shiva came there and told his supernatural power in the ear of the dragon-like demon that your tail has caught fire. On hearing this, the dragon looked back, then Shiva separated his head from the body with his trident. That dynasty came to an end with the blow of the trident. As soon as Kulant died, his body turned into a huge mountain.
The part of the body that was spread over the earth, whole area turned into a mountain. That place of Kullu valley is believed to be built from Bijli Mahadev to Rohtang Pass and on the other hand the valley of Ghogghardhar of Mandi was formed from the body of Kulant. This is the story of Kullu. Kulant to Kulut and then known as Kullu.
Why does celestial lightning fall on Shivling only?
It is said about the celestial lightning falling on the Shivling itself that Lord Shiva did not want that when the lightning fell, it would not harm the public wealth. Therefore, to save the people, Bholenath they drop the terrible celestial lightning on themselves. Because of this reason Bholenath is called Bijli Mahadev here.
